Malik Amjad Zubair Tiwana, a prominent Inland Revenue Service (IRS) officer, has been announced as the new Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman. Tiwana, presently serving as a member operation of the IRS, was appointed to the top position of the FBR by the federal cabinet via a circulation summary. A formal notification about Tiwana’s appointment will be released on Tuesday.
FBR’s Priorities and Goals
Asim Ahmad, the previous FBR chairman, retired on July 30 after being appointed by the PML-N-led coalition government on April 27 the previous year. The race for the top FBR position saw numerous IRS, Customs, and Pakistan Administration Services contenders. However, the official source indicated that Finance Minister Ishaq Dar approved Tiwana’s summary for the top FBR post. The government has set an ambitious revenue collection target of Rs9.415 trillion for the current fiscal year, up from the revised collection of Rs7.2tr in the prior year – a significant increase of Rs2.219tr, or 30%.
