Punjab’s Minister of Information, Uzma Bukhari, praised Maryam Nawaz for her modest lifestyle, highlighting her penchant for wearing affordable clothing and minimal makeup.
According to Bukhari, Nawaz frequently purchases outfits ranging from 500 to 800 rupees at regular markets and uses only one or two makeup products.
However, Bukhari’s claim quickly sparked a vigorous debate on social media, drawing scepticism and sarcasm from the public. Critics questioned the realism of finding inexpensive clothing amid rising inflation, with many pointing out that even basic clothing items exceed the prices mentioned.
Social media users expressed disbelief over the availability of lawn suits within the stated price range, suggesting that even simple T-shirts now cost more than 800 rupees. Humorously suggested that if such prices were accurate, perhaps Uzma Bukhari was making the clothes.
Obaid Bhatti critiqued the claim as excessively idealized, joking that such a sweetened portrayal could “give the entire population of 250 million people diabetes.” He highlighted the discrepancy between the alleged cost of Nawaz’s outfits and the current tailoring prices, which typically range from 1500 to 2000 rupees.
Faraz Chishti also chimed in, noting the improbability of even children’s ready-made clothes being available at such prices, and speculated on the mysterious nature of the fabric used in Nawaz’s clothing.
Bukhari’s statement, intended to depict Maryam Nawaz’s simplicity, fueled a robust online discussion about economic reality and the perceived disconnect between political narratives and public experiences.
