Last year, Netflix removed its Basic ad-free plan for new US and UK subscribers. It was the most affordable way to watch Netflix without ads. Now, claims on social media suggest that this change will also apply to existing subscribers. Amidst these developments, there are reports that Netflix might introduce a free, ad-supported plan in certain regions.
A Netflix subreddit user, @MeltedInk8624, posted a screenshot showing Netflix’s request to switch plans. The Basic plan is missing from the list, leaving the ‘Standard with ads’ plan as the cheapest option, priced at $6.99 monthly.
The user commented, “So you’re telling me that even after getting a plan that’s paid monthly, they locked certain shows behind a paywall?! I’m already paying for this service, so why do I need to pay more?!”
To avoid ads, subscribers can choose the Standard or Premium plans, costing $15.49 and $22.99 per month in the US. The Standard plan allows streaming in Full HD on two devices, while the Premium plan supports four devices in 4K.
According to Amy Reinhard, Netflix‘s President of Advertising, the ad-supported plan is now the most popular choice among users, with 40 million active users globally. In regions where it is available, 40% of all new Netflix sign-ups choose the ad-supported plan.
Free Netflix Plan
Reports suggest that Netflix may launch an ad-supported free-to-watch plan in certain Asian and European markets. This initiative aims to expand the platform’s audience, similar to other TV networks that offer free plans. If launched, it would be Netflix’s second attempt at a free-to-watch plan, following a trial in Kenya 2021 for Android smartphones, which was discontinued a year later.
