The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is gearing up to review a significant request from power companies to lower electricity tariffs across Pakistan.
NEPRA’s potential price reduction, Rs 52.12 billion, targets the second quarterly adjustment of the current fiscal year.
This proposal details a substantial decrease in various charges, including Rs 50.66 billion in capacity charges, Rs 2.66 billion in transmission and distribution losses, and Rs 2.69 billion in operation and maintenance expenses. If NEPRA approves this proposal, the revised tariffs will apply from October to December 2024 and will be reflected directly on consumer electricity bills.
NEPRA will thoroughly assess this proposal and forward its decision to the federal government for final approval. Successful endorsement of this proposal will initiate the implementation of the reduced tariffs, offering considerable relief to electricity users nationwide.

In contrast, NEPRA had announced a minor increase of 20-paise per unit in electricity prices last month, as part of the quarterly adjustment for the first quarter of the fiscal year. This increase imposes an additional Rs1.18 billion burden on consumers, which was confirmed through an official notification.
This price hike, effective only for December 2024, excludes lifeline and prepaid consumers. Furthermore, under the winter package, consumers with increased electricity usage will also be exempt from this adjustment, mitigating the impact on those with higher winter energy needs.
