The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has preliminarily proposed increasing electricity prices. Based on December’s fuel price adjustment, the recommendation suggests a rise of Rs5.62 per unit. NEPRA’s chairman, Waseem Mukhtiar, presided over the meeting.
Impact on Consumers and NEPRA’s Deliberation
This increase could cost consumers an additional Rs42 billion in February alone. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) requested this hike to manage escalating fuel costs. According to CPPA, December’s reference fuel price was Rs5.40 per unit, dwarfing the average unit cost of Rs11.
NEPRA has initially approved this request pending further analysis. This prospective increase follows recent hikes, heightening household financial concerns. Consumers across Pakistan anticipate NEPRA’s final decision.
