The National Electrical Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has announced a Rs3.76 per unit increase in electricity rates for a quarterly adjustment.
According to the notification, Nepra will allow power companies to recover over Rs46 billion from consumers during June, July, and August 2024 for the third quarter of FY2023-24.
The notification states, “In pursuance of Proviso (ii) to Sub-Section 7 of Section 31 of the Regulation of Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electric Power Act, 1997, Nepra hereby notifies the complete decision in the matter of requests filed by XWDISCOs for periodic adjustment in tariff for the 3rd quarter of FY 2023-24, already intimated to the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) on May 31, 2024.”
Recovery rates will be Rs1.90/kWh in June, Rs0.9262/kWh in July, and Rs0.9262/kWh in August. This hike will apply to all consumer categories except lifeline consumers of XWDISCOs and K-Electric, Nepra stated.
The authority has instructed all power distribution companies to comply with court orders despite this decision.
This electricity price hike adds an extra burden to inflation-hit consumers. Earlier, in March 2024, Nepra increased the electricity tariff by Rs2.83 per unit due to fuel charges adjustment.
