In the aftermath of the 2024 general elections, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has signalled its confidence in forming the next government, with Nawaz Sharif, the party’s supremo, preparing to deliver a victory speech. Maryam Nawaz, the PML-N’s Chief Organizer, countered the media’s portrayal of the election outcomes, announcing on X (formerly Twitter) the party’s status as the leading party at the centre and in Punjab, pending some final results.
Independent Candidates and PML-N’s Majority
Ishaq Dar, a leading figure within PML-N, revealed that independent candidates, many of whom secured victories with PTI’s backing, are engaging with PML-N about potential alliances. According to Dar, these discussions align with constitutional provisions allowing candidates a 72-hour window to affiliate with a party post-elections. He emphasized the strategic importance of these independents in securing a majority, particularly in Punjab, where PML-N claims a significant lead.
Dar further highlighted the potential loss of reserved seats for independents should they choose not to join a political party, underscoring the pivotal role these candidates play in forming a government. With claims of leading in both the National Assembly and Punjab, PML-N anticipates forming the government at the centre and in Punjab, acknowledging the possibility of collaboration with other parties to secure a majority, as suggested by Nawaz Sharif.
As the final results are awaited, PML-N remains optimistic about its electoral success and its ability to lead the next government, emphasizing a willingness to accept the outcomes and extend congratulations to all election winners.
