PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif announced plans on Wednesday to reform Pakistan’s political system. He argued that this system has caused the downfall of prime ministers, including himself. Speaking at a rally in Punjab’s Nankana Sahib district, Sharif questioned the motives behind his removal before the last elections. He highlighted his government’s achievements, like overcoming load-shedding, controlling inflation, and building a network of motorways. Sharif expressed his determination to change the system and sought public support.
Sharif’s Critique of Pakistan’s Current State
Sharif contrasted Pakistan’s current state with its condition during his tenure. He pointed out the country’s current economic struggles, including inflation and currency depreciation. Sharif promised relief for the people from these issues if his party wins the upcoming February 8 elections. He pledged to make Nankana Sahib a model city, including building a cardiology hospital and a boys’ degree college and granting land rights to katchi abadi residents.
During his third rally since the election campaign began, Sharif criticized politicians who backtracked their promises in a veiled reference to Mr Khan. He recalled his contribution to infrastructure, like the motorway to Multan and Sukkur. He regretted not completing it to Karachi due to opposition. Sharif emphasized his continued high morale despite challenges.
Maryam Nawaz, speaking at the same rally, defended her father. She refuted claims of him being favored by the establishment and asserted his popularity among the people. She held him solely responsible for his 2022 ouster without directly naming Imran Khan.
PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif also addressed the nation’s youth. He stressed the need for Pakistan to invest in its young population, which forms over 60% of the country. He acknowledged their challenges and achievements, promising to prioritize higher education if his party wins the elections.
