Nawaz Sharif, the head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is on the brink of finalizing the appointment of the caretaker Prime Minister as he finalizes the candidate. The procedure is nearing completion.
Nawaz Sharif has been conducting a series of discussions with influential political personalities like Asif Ali Zardari and Fazlur Rehman to deliberate on selecting the caretaker Prime Minister. He has consulted with his younger brother and incumbent Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif.
After these dialogues, Nawaz Sharif proposed three potential candidates to PM Shahbaz Sharif but advised keeping the chosen name confidential until discussions with opposition leaders occurred.
The following step in this process involves a meeting between Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and the opposition leader within 36 hours. Should they arrive at a consensus, the announcement of the caretaker Prime Minister will follow suit.
However, in the case of failing to reach a mutual agreement, the proposed names will be handed over to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for review and selection.
Notably, Shahbaz Sharif will retain his position as Prime Minister even after the assembly’s dissolution if an agreement on the caretaker Prime Minister is not reached. His term will extend until the ECP formally declares the chosen candidate for this pivotal temporary role.
