The South Pacific nation of Nauru has altered its diplomatic stance by discontinuing its ties with Taiwan. The announcement came following the election of Lai Ching-te, known for his pro-independence views, as Taiwan’s president.
Nauru’s government now recognizes Taiwan as part of Chinese territory, aligning with China’s long-held claim. China views Taiwan as a province and has not ruled out forceful reclamation.
Following Nauru’s announcement, Taiwan severed its diplomatic relationship with Nauru. Taiwan’s deputy foreign minister, Tien Chung-kwang, stated this move was to uphold Taiwan’s national dignity. Nauru’s decision marks a strategic victory for Beijing, given Nauru’s prior recognition of Taiwan. Nauru maintains its intent to continue friendly relations with other nations.
Beijing has applauded Nauru’s decision, with a foreign ministry spokesperson endorsing the “One China Principle.” This principle asserts Taiwan’s inseparability from China. Nauru’s move ushers in a new era in China-Nauru relations, indicating a pivotal shift in Pacific regional diplomacy.
