On Saturday, the nation solemnly observes Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, the first Islamic month. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the supreme sacrifices made by Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) family during the distressing events that unfolded at Karbala.
The focus of this day revolves around Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of the Prophet (PBUH), along with his family and dedicated companions. They are remembered for their unwavering courage and fierce defence of Islam in the face of harsh opposition and tyranny.
To honour this day, scholars and speakers across various cities and towns share insightful sermons that shed light on the multifaceted tragedy at Karbala.
Nationwide, extensive security measures have been implemented to ensure a peaceful mourning period during the processions. By the directives from the interior ministry, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has suspended mobile services from Muharram 9 to 11 in several cities, aiming to prevent potential disturbances.
Promoting Unity and Reflection: Words from National Leaders
On this occasion, President Dr Arif Alvi urged Pakistanis to put aside differences and foster an environment of compassion, tolerance, and dialogue. His plea aims to foster unity and facilitate collective work towards Pakistan’s progress. The president’s message highlighted the need to recommit to Islam’s core principles and live by the teachings and virtues displayed by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) in their daily lives.
President Alvi further noted the immense sacrifice Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) made at Karbala, a conflict characterized by a steadfast stance and unwavering courage. It was a struggle for the upliftment of Islam, the defence of Islamic values, and the fight against oppression and corruption.
Echoing these sentiments, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asserted that the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) is an enduring lesson of unwavering faith, purity, and the pursuit of justice. He reminded Muslims of their moral responsibility to resist oppression and tyranny.
He emphasized that Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, holds deep spiritual and historical significance for Muslims worldwide. He acknowledged that the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) transcends temporal and spatial boundaries and is a timeless message for all Muslims.
