Due to a severe heat wave and power crisis, the country is grappling with an acute electricity shortfall of 7,600 megawatts. According to the National Power Construction Corporation, current electricity production is 19,200 megawatts, while the national demand is 26,800MW. This supply-demand gap has led to extended load-shedding hours, with urban areas experiencing six to eight hours of power outages and rural regions facing 10 to 12 hours.
Areas with high line losses, power theft, and low recovery are subjected to longer load-shedding durations. The NPCC reports that 5,700MW of electricity is generated from hydropower, 10,400MW from private power plants, 1,000MW from thermal sources, and 2,100MW from a combination of wind, solar, and nuclear power plants.
