Authorities imposed a lockdown in parts of Nagpur on Tuesday, following an indefinite curfew that was enacted after violent clashes occurred on Monday.
A Hindu group demanded the removal of a Mughal ruler’s tomb. Over a dozen police officers were injured. This clash in Nagpur during curfew is making waves.
The chaos began with the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), which burned an effigy of Emperor Aurangzeb. Slogans were raised calling for the removal of his tomb in Aurangabad. The situation escalated when police reported that Muslim groups marched near a station and threw stones, resulting in injuries to fifteen officers, one of whom was severely hurt. Additionally, several vehicles were damaged in the unrest.

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, addressed the situation in a video, stating, “We must maintain law and order.” He issued a directive for strict police action. A resident informed ANI that masked attackers used weapons and bottles during the incident. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has denied inciting the violence. According to leader Milind Parande, they focus on establishing a Maratha memorial instead.

Nagpur is home to the RSS, which is affiliated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP. The VHP also shares this connection. Critics argue that Modi’s government ignores acts of anti-Muslim violence, a claim Modi denies. On Monday, unrest in the city resulted in injuries to several individuals beyond just the police. The clashes leading to the Nagpur curfew are part of the broader, tense debates in India.
