The National Assembly of Pakistan passed a resolution on Monday, demanding a speedy trial under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952, for all those involved in the violent incidents of May 9, including Imran Khan, Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The assembly has requested that legal action against the culprits should be taken promptly, adhering to the guidelines set by the law and the constitution.

Resolution for Pakistan Army Act, 1952

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif tabled the resolution in the lower house of the parliament, which was unanimously passed. The resolution implicitly referred to PTI and its chairman but avoided naming them directly. It detailed the violation of law and constitution by a political party and its chairman on May 9, culminating in the assault on military installations.

The statement underlined the irreparable damage caused by these incidents to the state and its institutions. Moreover, it denounced the party’s agenda as rooted in hostility against Pakistan. The document took a strong stand against portraying these actions as human rights violations while dealing with the miscreant elements involved in the May 9 disturbances.

The resolution debunked certain elements propagating baseless narratives about the incident. It emphasized that those engaged in violent acts against military installations must be brought to trial under the Army Act 1952 without delay, aligning with global norms where military courts handle such matters.

While addressing the assembly, Asif clarified that no new legislation had been introduced in response to the violent incidents of May 9. He admired the armed forces, highlighting their commitment to defending the country and their personnel continuously sacrificing their lives for national security.

The Defence Minister condemned the orchestrated attacks on military installations, which he viewed as an attempt to belittle the sacrifices of martyrs. He asserted that such actions would not be tolerated under any circumstances. The minister also criticized PTI, accusing the party of attacking Pakistan’s integrity and sovereignty.
