At least 30 people were killed in an airstrike on a major hospital in Myanmar. The attack hit Mrauk U General Hospital in western Rakhine state on Wednesday. More than 70 others were injured in the bombing, according to local reports. A rebel group, an aid worker, and an eyewitness provided these casualty figures.
The Arakan Army rebel group accused the ruling military junta of the attack. Spokesman Khine Thu Kha said bombs from a military aircraft destroyed the facility. “The Mrauk U General Hospital was destroyed,” Kha told Reuters. “The high number of casualties occurred because the hospital took a direct hit.”
A junta spokesman did not respond to requests for comment. Myanmar has been in conflict since the military’s 2021 coup. That coup unseated the elected government led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. The 300-bed hospital was reportedly overflowing with patients during the strike.
Most healthcare services across Rakhine state are currently suspended due to fighting. Aid worker Wai Hun Aung confirmed the high patient volume at the time. Images shared by the aid worker on Thursday showed the hospital in complete ruins.

The photos depicted a collapsed roof, shattered structural columns, and victims’ bodies on the ground. Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of these images. The aid worker stated that the remaining patients had been moved to a safer location.
A 23-year-old resident described rushing to the scene after hearing explosions. “When I arrived, the hospital was on fire,” the witness said, requesting anonymity for safety. “I saw many bodies lying around and many injured people.”

The military junta possesses Myanmar’s only air force. It has increasingly used airstrikes to target rebel-held territories. Data shows a sharp rise in such strikes from January to November 2025 compared to the previous full year.
The Arakan Army is a major ethnic armed group fighting the junta. Since a 2023 ceasefire breakdown, it has gained control of most townships in Rakhine state. The group’s spokesman noted Mrauk-U township had been under its control for over a year. He stated there was no recent fighting in the immediate area before the hospital strike.
