On July 5, 2025, Pakistan observed Muharram 9 with processions in major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar, while implementing stringent security measures throughout the country. Authorities partially suspended mobile services and sealed roads to prevent unrest, while over 150,000 police officers ensured safety during this sensitive period.
In Karachi, the main procession began at 1:00 PM from Nishtar Park, following a majlis led by Allama Shahenshah Hussain Naqvi, and was accompanied by Zuhrain prayers conducted by the Imamia Students Organisation. The procession followed its traditional route through Numaish, Saddar, and Denso Hall, concluding at Hussainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar. In Lahore, the procession began at 10:00 AM, with 10,000 officers securing 79 processions and 378 majlis across Punjab, according to Punjab Police. Peshawar’s procession commenced from Husainia Hall, with authorities sealing the surrounding Addar and Cantonment areas.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police deployed over 147,000 personnel across the province, including 10,000 officers in Peshawar alone. Mobile services remained suspended from July 5 to 6, and authorities halted Peshawar’s BRT operations. The enforcement of Section 144 and the Loudspeaker Act, along with the ban on Afghan refugee entry, further tightened security. Punjab IG Dr. Usman Anwar emphasised the province’s high alert status and coordinated efforts with Rescue 1122 and fire brigades. Social media posts, such as “Security first for Muharram,” reflect strong public support for these measures.
Muharram, which commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), represents a particularly sensitive time. Punjab Police data indicates that 45% of the 1,689 processions are high-risk. Past incidents, including the 2023 Quetta blast that claimed 10 lives, have prompted heightened vigilance. The suspension of mobile services, affecting 90 million users according to the PTA, aims to curb misinformation; Punjab authorities have flagged 932 social media links for monitoring. Emergency services remain active, with a special focus on the safety of women and children.
An estimated 2 million people attended Muharram 9 processions nationwide, underscoring the event’s cultural and religious significance. However, the associated security risks require robust measures. The deployment of 150,000 officers and the implementation of mobile restrictions highlight Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining peace and public safety during this solemn period, fostering community trust and unity.
