Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus has been inaugurated as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government.
Following student-led protests, The swearing-in ceremony in Dhaka on Thursday prompted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and leave for India.
During the oath-taking, Yunus committed to “uphold, support, and protect the constitution” and to perform his duties “sincerely.”
The interim government, composed of 15 members, including Yunus, was sworn in, and Nobel laureate Dr. Mohammad Yunus was appointed as Chief Advisor.
Bangladesh’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to Yunus at the presidential palace in Dhaka in a ceremony attended by foreign diplomats, civil society members, top businessmen, and members of the former opposition party. Notably, representatives from Hasina’s party were excluded from the interim government.
The Cabinet now includes sixteen other members, primarily from civil society, and two student protest leaders.
This selection occurred after discussions this week involving student leaders, civil society, and the military under Yunus’s leadership.
Hasina resigned after weeks of turmoil, starting in July, due to protests against a government job quota system favouring her party’s affiliates.
