Lifting a five-month ban, the Supreme Court has allowed plying of motorcycle-rickshaws, commonly known as Qingqis, in Karachi, earlier today.
The orders were issued by a two-member SC bench headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmed who heard the case and issued verdict.
In its ruling, the court allowed plying of bike-rickshaw in Karachi with a condition of fitness certificate and safety measures.
The court ordered traffic authorities to come up with an inspection report of qingqis within three months.
The bench also directed transport department to devise a mechanism to check fitness of the three-wheelers countrywide and ensure implementation of safety measures.
“Transport mafia rules Karachi… where were the transport department when these rickshaws emerged on roads?” observed Justice Dost Muhammad, a member of the bench.
The case was adjourned for three months.
The ban on qingqis was imposed by Sindh High Court in August 2015.
