Moschino recently unveiled a £3,730 clutch bag shaped like celery sticks, igniting discussions. Known for whimsical, food-inspired designs, the luxury brand has attracted criticism for this expensive, handcrafted accessory.
The ‘Sedano Bag’ is crafted from nappa leather with a digital print for a three-dimensional effect. Moschino describes this accessory as embodying its irreverent spirit, enhanced by its realistic two-tone colour.
In contrast, budget retailer Aldi introduced a practical alternative priced at just 75p, consisting of actual celery sticks. Aldi’s version mocks high fashion’s extravagant prices and emphasizes the practicality of their produce.
On Facebook, Aldi showcased this contrast with a post featuring a model in a supermarket aisle holding celery sticks. The caption, “Your move, Moschino, but we do have a whole veg aisle,” humorously challenged Moschino’s luxury item.
Aldi’s post parodied Moschino’s ad using similar images but with real celery instead of a leather bag. Moschino’s version includes movable branches and leaves, adding volume to mimic real celery.
Consumer reactions are mixed, with many finding humour in both Moschino’s luxury bag and Aldi’s satirical approach. Comments ranged from disbelief to jokes about such a novelty accessory’s practicality and target market. Some even suggested that it might be more fitting to wear such an item to a farmer’s market or to use actual vegetables as a fashion statement, highlighting the absurdity of the high-priced item.
