Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from T20 international cricket, opting to focus on Test matches and One-Day Internationals (ODIs). Starc took 79 wickets in 65 T20 games and is the second-best T20 bowler for Australia.
Starc, 35, said he wants to stay fit for big events like the 2026 Test tour in India, the Ashes series, and the 2027 ODI World Cup. He said, “Test cricket is my main focus. I enjoyed every T20 game, especially winning the 2021 World Cup.” His retirement gives younger bowlers a chance to prepare for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

On September 2, 2025, selectors chose a new T20 team for the New Zealand series. Bowlers Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Hazlewood, and Sean Abbott will lead. Nathan Ellis will miss the tour because of the birth of his child. Mitch Owen and Matt Short are back from injury, and Marcus Stoinis returns to the team. Pat Cummins will also miss the series due to back pain.

Starc’s 79 wickets in T20Is put him just behind Adam Zampa for Australia. His great bowling in the 2021 T20 World Cup helped Australia win the title. Selector George Bailey said Starc had a special ability to change games by taking important wickets. Cricket Australia’s CEO, Todd Greenberg, praised his dedication and team spirit.
Pat Cummins, who is recovering from back pain sustained during the West Indies tour, will miss the upcoming limited-overs games to rest and prepare for the Ashes. His back injury will take months to heal. This indicates that Australia is focusing on performing well in Test cricket.
