A plane carrying 153 passengers nearly experienced a catastrophe as both pilots fell asleep, leading to a deviation from its course. This incident occurred in Indonesia on January 25, 2024. The Indonesian Transport Ministry announced an investigation into the pilots, as reported by Antara, citing M Kristi Endah Murni, the director-general of civil aviation.

The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) reported that the pilots slept for 28 minutes on the flight from Kendari to Jakarta, causing the plane to stray from its intended path. Despite this, the flight, which lasted two hours and 35 minutes, landed safely in Jakarta without any injuries to the 153 passengers or damage to the plane.

Two pilots have been “temporarily suspended” after they both fell asleep during a two-hour and 35-minute flight, with 159 people on board. https://t.co/vIr3YR3iU2

The co-pilot had admitted to lacking rest earlier that day. Murni stated plans to review night flight operations and fatigue risk management for Batik Air and others, as per Antara.
