In a detailed exploration of the greatest boxers in history, the discussion often turns to legends like Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis, and Muhammad Ali. Their iconic status is undisputed in the annals of boxing, as recently highlighted by ‘The Ring Magazine’, which celebrated its centennial by listing the top 100 boxers of all time.

Here’s a closer look at some boxers who made the top five on that prestigious list.

Sugar Ray Robinson

Sugar Ray Robinson has an impressive record of 174 wins, 19 losses, and 6 draws, including 109 knockouts. Known for his unbeaten streaks of 40 and 91 fights, Robinson’s performances against champions and top 10 fighters resulted in over 40 victories. His attack style and charisma made him a favourite, often cited by other greats like Ali and Joe Louis as the best to ever step into the ring.

Joe Louis

The ‘Brown Bomber’ was perhaps the most dominant champion in the sport’s history. He held the title for twelve years and set a record with 25 consecutive title defences, showcasing his era’s unparalleled prowess.

Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali’s legacy includes his charismatic persona and formidable record before and during his reign as world champion. Ali secured his title shot after defeating four top-10 fighters and successfully defended his title in nine bouts, including memorable fights against Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson, and Ernie Terrell.

Tony Canzoneri and Emile Griffith

They are also prominently featured in boxing history. With a record of 137-24-10, including 44 KOs, Canzoneri demonstrated versatility across weight classes from bantamweight to lightweight, with significant victories even at welterweight. Griffith, who competed primarily in the welterweight and middleweight divisions, secured five world championships and left a lasting mark from the early 1960s to the mid-1970s.

During an interview with Fox Sports Mexico, Mike Tyson recently shed light on another monumental figure, Julio Cesar Chavez. Tyson recounted the legendary 1993 fight where Chavez drew 120,000 people to Estadio Azteca to face Greg Haugen, a testament to his popularity and skill. Chavez’s influence extends beyond the ring; Tyson has hailed him as the greatest boxer in Mexican history, surpassing contemporary greats like Canelo Alvarez.

Tyson’s admiration for Chavez is profound. He emphasized Chavez’s unparalleled contributions and numerous title defences, declaring, “You must stand up. No Mexican ever did it, so you can’t say he’s not the best leader. You can’t deny that he’s one of not only the best Mexican boxers but of the whole world.”

This recognition from a fellow boxing legend underlines the deep respect and historical significance that Julio Cesar Chavez holds, not just within Mexico but globally. It showcases the timeless nature of his achievements and his enduring legacy in boxing.
