A known confidant of former President Donald Trump, Johnson’s unanimous endorsement by his party marked the end of a tumultuous chapter characterized by legislative standstills, global crises, and intra-party contention.
The vacuum left by Kevin McCarthy’s unprecedented removal saw various seasoned politicians vying for the influential position. Among those were Tom Emmer of Minnesota, with a background in ice hockey coaching; Byron Donalds, a steadfast Republican from Florida; and Austin Scott, the Georgia representative with over a decade in Congress. Other noteworthy candidates included Kevin Hern, an influential figure from Oklahoma, and several reputable names like Gary Palmer, Pete Sessions, Jack Bergman, and Dan Meuser.

October 4 marked a watershed moment in American political history. Kevin McCarthy was stripped of his role as Speaker of the House, a move propelled by a faction within his party and spearheaded by Democratic members.
The resolution to vacate the Speaker’s office, a first in 234 years, set off a scramble for leadership, underlining the unstable political climate leading into the presidential election season.
The aftermath of McCarthy’s ouster echoed with criticism and support from different quarters of the Republican party. Representative Matt Gaetz lambasted McCarthy as a “creature of the swamp,” attributing his rise to power to dubious financial manoeuvres.
