A devastating fire swept through a discount store in northwestern Mexico on Saturday, killing at least 23 people and injuring a dozen others. The tragedy occurred in the city of Hermosillo during the country’s Day of the Dead holiday celebrations.
The blaze engulfed a Waldo’s discount store in the city centre. Sonora state Governor Alfonso Durazo confirmed the deaths, noting that children were among the victims. He has ordered a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
According to State Attorney General Gustavo Salas, most victims died from inhaling toxic gases. The Sonora Red Cross deployed 40 staff members and 10 ambulances, making multiple trips to local hospitals to provide assistance to the injured.

The fire has been extinguished, but the cause remains under official investigation. While some media reports suggested an electrical failure, city officials have stated the store was not the target of an attack. The chief of the city’s firefighters said authorities are still investigating whether an explosion occurred.
