Meta Platforms launched its first consumer-ready smart glasses with a built-in display: the Ray-Ban Display. CEO Mark Zuckerberg showcased the new Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses and a wristband controller at the Meta Connect event in Menlo Park, California. The $799 glasses aim to make AI “superintelligence” wearable and practical for daily life.

The Ray-Ban Display glasses feature a small digital screen in the right lens for notifications and basic tasks. They include Meta’s AI assistant, cameras, hands-free controls, and livestreaming to Facebook and Instagram. The wristband translates hand gestures into commands, like answering calls or texts. Battery life lasts nine hours, with a charging case for extended use. Available September 30 in stores.

Meta also introduced Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses for sports, priced at $499. These integrate with Garmin and Strava for real-time training stats and post-workout summaries. With nine hours of battery life, they launch on October 21. The updated Ray-Ban line without display offers improved battery and camera for $379, up from $299.

Zuckerberg called the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses the “ideal form factor for personal superintelligence.” They let users stay present while accessing AI for communication, memory, and senses. Despite demo glitches, the crowd applauded. Analysts see it as Meta’s step toward 2027’s Orion AR glasses prototype, positioning the company in the AI wearable race.

IDC predicts AR/VR headset and smart glasses shipments will grow 39.2% in 2025 to 14.3 million units, with Meta leading via Ray-Ban demand. Forrester’s Mike Proulx compared it to Apple’s Watch launch. Jitesh Ubrani from IDC noted the tech’s value but said software needs improvement for mass appeal.

Meta’s Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses extend AI beyond phones, challenging rivals like OpenAI and Google. They address child safety concerns on Meta’s platforms while advancing wearables. The launch shows Meta’s $10B+ AI chip investment paying off, potentially reshaping daily tech use.
