Meta announced that it will discontinue the desktop apps for Messenger on Windows and Mac starting December 15.
According to CNET, after this date, users will need to access Messenger through Facebook.com or Messenger.com. An in-app notification will inform users about the change and provide a 60-day grace period before the service is permanently shut down.
Meta recommends enabling secure storage with a PIN to protect chat history. Users who activate secure storage will maintain access across platforms. Additionally, those without a Facebook account can log into Messenger.com without needing to create one.

Meta separated Messenger from Facebook in 2014 to create a standalone platform. A planned integration with Instagram Direct Messaging was abandoned in 2023. Recently, Meta focused on safety, launching Teen Accounts in September 2025 to limit interactions and promote healthier screen time
The shutdown reflects Meta’s transition to web-based platforms, simplifying services while enhancing safety. Users need to adapt to retain access. For more details, visit Meta’s help page, CNET, or TechCrunch.
