On May 28, 2025, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta AI, the company’s generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) assistant, has reached 1 billion monthly active users across its platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
At Meta’s annual shareholder meeting, Zuckerberg positioned the milestone as a step toward leading the Gen AI race against competitors like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.
Launched on April 29, 2025, as a standalone app, Meta AI is designed to integrate seamlessly into Meta’s ecosystem, providing personalised voice and text interactions. Chief Financial Officer Susan Li pointed out that WhatsApp is the fastest-growing platform for Meta AI, benefiting from its 2 billion users. Although Zuckerberg reported that the app has 1 billion users, it remains unclear how many actively seek the chatbot versus those who encounter it passively through various app features.

According to Forbes, the assistant, powered by Llama 3.3, competes with Google’s Gemini (400 million monthly users) and Google Search’s AI Overviews (1.5 billion users).
Competitive Landscape
Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted Google Search’s AI Overviews as the most widely used generative AI product, shifting away from traditional link-based results. Microsoft’s Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT are also competing for market dominance. However, Meta AI has a unique advantage due to its integration across 3.2 billion daily active users. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, including the risks of misinformation and unclear monetisation models, with Meta relying on ad-driven growth.

Stanford tech analyst Dr. Faisal Riaz notes, “Meta AI’s billion-user milestone leverages its app ecosystem, but sustaining engagement requires robust personalisation and trust in AI outputs.”
Meta AI’s rapid adoption signals its potential to redefine personal assistants, but competition and ethical concerns loom.
