Lionel Messi scored two goals in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Venezuela. It was the second-to-last game in South America’s World Cup qualifiers.
Despite the win and Argentina’s early qualification, the 38-year-old captain is unsure if he will play in the 2026 World Cup. He has been affected by injuries and missed several games for Inter Miami in MLS.
“At 39, it’s unlikely I’d play in the World Cup,” Messi told reporters after the match. “It’s nine months away—close, but also far. I love playing, but I know the end is near.”

Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, has decided to rest Messi for the final qualifier against Ecuador on September 9, 2025. Messi said he takes things one day at a time. “When I feel good, I enjoy playing. If I don’t, I struggle and prefer to rest.”

He added he will decide about the World Cup based on how he feels. “I’m excited and motivated, but I have to be honest with myself.”
If Messi does not play in the tournament held in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, it will mark the end of an era for football fans.
