Billionaire Melinda French Gates, the former wife of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, has decided to step down as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She shared her decision on X this Monday, noting, “This is not a decision I came to lightly.”
Since its inception in 2000, the foundation has been a significant part of Bill and Melinda Gates’ lives, with over $36 billion of their wealth donated between 1994 and 2018. Melinda expressed great pride in what they achieved together. As part of an agreement, she revealed that she would receive an additional $12.5 billion for her charitable initiatives focusing on women and families.
June 7 will mark her final day as co-chair of the foundation. In her statement, Melinda emphasized the importance of supporting equality and advocacy efforts for women and girls in the U.S. and globally, describing it as a “critical moment.”
Bill Gates responded to her resignation with both regret and optimism, acknowledging her significant future impact on philanthropy. The couple, who separated in 2021 after 27 years of marriage, had previously affirmed their commitment to continue their philanthropic collaboration.
It is important to note that the Gates Foundation is one of the leading organizations in public health, with an endowment surpassing $75 billion as of December 2023.
In 2015, Melinda French Gates established Pivotal Ventures, an investment and incubation company independent of the Gates Foundation. This company focuses on creating employment opportunities for women and minority groups.
