A devastating event unfolded at Lahore’s Mayo Hospital when a 31-year-old female patient lost her life due to an adverse reaction to an injection in the Chest Surgery Ward, leaving 18 other patients in critical condition. Hospital authorities swiftly addressed the crisis, but the tragedy has raised serious questions about patient safety protocols.
Dr. Ehtesham, the Medical Superintendent (MS) of Mayo Hospital, confirmed the fatality. He announced an immediate suspension of the suspected injection to prevent further harm. Meanwhile, Dr. Haroon Hamid, tasked with overseeing the response, established a high-level committee to investigate the incident thoroughly. The hospital administration now prioritises patient safety enhancements to ensure such events never happen again.
Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz visited the facility after hearing numerous complaints from patients and their families. Frustrated by the hospital’s mismanagement, she removed the Medical Superintendent from his role on the spot. “You don’t even know what’s happening with the patients,” she remarked sharply. “Who appointed you here? Be grateful I’m not having you arrested.”
