Margot Robbie values the audience over critics, making it clear that viewers come first in her filmmaking decisions. In a recent video interview with Vogue Australia, the Oscar-nominated actor said she always prioritises how audiences will feel over how critics might respond.
Robbie appeared alongside her Wuthering Heights co-star Jacob Elordi, with the discussion moderated by Australian actor Joel Edgerton.
“I consider the audience always,” Robbie said. “I’ve never been on set and thought, ‘What are the critics going to think?’”
Expanding on her perspective, Robbie explained that emotional impact guides her creative choices. Rather than chasing critical acclaim, she focuses on the experience of people who buy tickets and watch the film.
“I believe you should make movies for the people who are going to buy tickets,” she said. For Robbie, the connection with moviegoers is more important than reviews.
She also praised director Emerald Fennell for sharing a similar mindset. According to Robbie, Fennell prioritises excitement and feeling over complex theory.
“I love working with Emerald because she always prioritises an emotional experience,” Robbie added.
Fennell previously directed Promising Young Woman and Saltburn, both of which sparked strong audience reactions. Robbie has produced all three of Fennell’s feature films, including Wuthering Heights.
