Shehbaz Sharif from PML-N and Omer Ayub Khan of PTI will compete for the prime ministerial role, with the National Assembly’s leader of house election scheduled for March 3.
The National Assembly Secretariat has released a timetable, stating that candidates must collect and submit their nomination forms by March 2, 2 pm, from the Assembly’s Legislation Branch. Nomination scrutiny will conclude by 3 pm that day.
Voting will occur via member division in the Assembly.
Before voting, a five-minute bell signals members to convene. The election will proceed under lockdown, barring entry or exit until completion.
The Speaker orchestrates the vote, directing members to respective lobbies for their candidate choice.
Assembly secretariat staff will record each member’s vote at lobby entrances, ensuring transparency as gallery observers watch. Party members must vote unanimously.
According to Section 91(4) of the Constitution, the Prime Minister is elected by a majority. If necessary, subsequent rounds will narrow the field until a majority is achieved.
PTI’s Ayub solicited support from JUI-F’s Maulana Fazlur Rehman for the prime minister, National Assembly speaker, and deputy speaker roles, accompanied by notable PTI figures.
Similarly, a coalition seeking the same positions, including PML-N, PPP, and others, met with Fazl, demonstrating a united front.
