Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar passed away late Friday in Mumbai at 87 due to heart complications.
Manoj Kumar, often referred to as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his patriotic roles in classic films such as *Upkaar* (1967), *Purab Aur Pachhim* (1970), and *Kranti* (1981), has made a lasting impact on Indian cinema. Social media was filled with tributes from stars and fans, celebrating his contribution to the film industry.
I grew up learning from him that there’s no emotion like love and pride for our country. And if we actors won’t take the lead in showing this emotion, who will? Such a fine person, and one of the biggest assets of our fraternity. RIP Manoj Sir. Om Shanti 🙏 pic.twitter.com/sr8U4Wkqgq

Akshay Kumar hailed him as a patriotic teacher. “I learned pride for our country from him,” he posted on X. Ajay Devgn shared a personal note: “He gave my father, Veeru Devgan, his first break on Roti Kapda Aur Makaan. His films were national emotions—his legacy is eternal.” Karan Johar recalled a childhood Kranti screening, calling Kumar a box-office history-maker.
Director Subhash Ghai praised Kumar’s craft. “His poetry, songs, and camera work inspired me,” he wrote. “A true legend of patriotism.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned on X: “An icon whose films sparked national pride. His work will inspire generations.”
Kumar’s accolades include the Padma Shri (1992), Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (1999), and Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2015). His 1975 Best Director win for Roti Kapda Aur Makaan cemented his stature. His storytelling shaped Bollywood’s golden era from Shor (1972) to Kranti.
