The Manganello Olympic bronze medal marked a career-defining moment, giving the American skater her first individual Olympic podium finish after three Games appearances.
Speaking emotionally to reporters, Manganello said, “This is the perfect ending. I’ve dreamed of this moment.” Her bronze also delivered a breakthrough for the U.S. women’s speed skating team.
Until this race, American women had narrowly missed the podium several times. Skaters placed fourth in the 1,000 meters, 1,500 meters, and team pursuit, along with a fifth-place finish in the 500 meters.
Manganello Olympic Bronze Medal
Manganello’s achievement pushed the United States to four medals in long-track speed skating at the Milano Cortina Games. That marks the country’s strongest long-track performance at these Games.
Meanwhile, the Netherlands completed a sweep of the mass start races. In the men’s event, Jorrit Bergsma claimed gold earlier on Saturday.
At 40 years old, Bergsma surprised competitors with an aggressive move on the third lap. The victory secured his second Olympic gold medal.
The Netherlands concluded the Games with five gold medals in speed skating, the highest total of any nation.
For the U.S., however, Manganello’s bronze stands out as both a personal triumph and a symbol of resilience after several close finishes earlier in the competition.
