New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani reaffirmed his stark criticism of former President Donald Trump. This confirmation came just days after their surprisingly friendly meeting at the White House.
The two political figures have a history of fierce public attacks. Trump once labeled Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic.” Mamdani has repeatedly accused Trump of attacking democratic norms.
Despite their differences, they met on Friday to discuss shared policy goals. Both leaders emerged from the Oval Office smiling.
Mamdani called Trump a fascist, and Trump apparently agreed and even joked about it.

In a subsequent “Meet the Press” interview, Mamdani was pressed on his past remarks. He did not retract his characterisation of Trump as a fascist. “Everything that I’ve said in the past, I continue to believe,” Mamdani stated. He emphasised the importance of acknowledging disagreements while pursuing practical outcomes.
“I’m not coming into the Oval Office to make a point or make a stand,” he explained. “I’m coming in there to deliver for New Yorkers.” During their joint press appearance, Trump himself deflected a question about Mamdani’s “fascist” label. He interjected before the mayor-elect could fully answer.

“That’s OK. You can just say yes. OK?” Trump said. “It’s easier. It’s easier than explaining it. I don’t mind.”
A Trump administration official later stressed the President’s desire to collaborate. They stated the goal is to “work with everybody who cares about the future of the American people.”
The meeting offered strategic benefits for both leaders. Mamdani gained direct access to the president to advocate for NYC. Trump showcased engagement on key voter issues like affordability.
