On June 2, 2025, a major jailbreak occurred at Malir Jail in Karachi, where 45-50 inmates escaped during earthquake tremors, marking one of Pakistan’s most serious prison breaches in recent years.
Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar confirmed that 46 escapees have been recaptured, with 18-20 still at large.
The Malir Jailbreak 2025 unfolded when inmates were moved from barracks to open areas for safety during Monday’s earthquake, per jail officials. Amid the disruption, 700-1,000 prisoners gathered at the main gate, with around 100 forcing it open, though the jail administration claims over 50 of the 100 escapees were re-arrested.
Lanjar clarified that no walls collapsed, contradicting initial reports. One inmate was killed, and three Frontier Corps (FC) personnel and one guard were injured during the incident.

A joint operation involving the Special Security Unit (SSU), Rapid Response Force (RRF), police, Rangers, and Frontier Corps (FC) quickly regained control of the jail. Inspector General of Prisons Qazi Nazir and the Sindh Prisons Minister inspected the facility, while Lanjar led the raids utilising prisoner records. Checkpoints and surveillance measures have been established to apprehend any remaining fugitives. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah was briefed on the situation and has directed Lanjar to personally manage the crisis.
Lanjar emphasised the possibility of staff negligence and promised disciplinary action. Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori expressed concern, urging Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar and the Inspector General of Police to ensure prompt arrests and a transparent investigation.
The Malir Jailbreak 2025 exposes vulnerabilities in Pakistan’s prison system, amplified by natural disasters like the earthquake jailbreak. As authorities intensify efforts to recapture escapees, the incident underscores the need for robust security reforms, which would impact public safety and trust in Sindh’s governance, per Business Recorder.
