President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives has stated the nation’s independence and refusal to be bullied following his return from China, where multiple agreements were signed.
President Mohamed Muizzu’s statement comes amidst growing tensions with India, which traditionally views the Maldives as within its sphere of influence.
Though a small nation, the Maldives has shifted towards China, its largest external creditor. “We are an independent nation,” President Muizzu affirmed upon his return to Male, stressing the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, a stance respected by China, as reported by the Mihaaru newspaper. President Muizzu’s election in September was marked by his commitment to strengthen relations with China and reduce Indian military presence in the region.
During his first state visit to China, the two countries reached a “broad consensus” on various issues, as detailed in a joint communique. The agreements signed covered diverse sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, renewable energy, agriculture, and marine environmental protection. China’s CCTV highlighted these deals, indicating a deepening of bilateral ties.
Navigating Healthcare and Diplomatic Challenges
Amidst the diplomatic balancing act, President Muizzu has also addressed the need to diversify the Maldives’ healthcare and medical dependencies. While traditionally reliant on India for medical treatment and pharmaceuticals, Muizzu announced plans to expand options for government-paid health treatments to include the United Arab Emirates, alongside reducing pharmaceutical imports from India in favour of the United States and European nations.
In a related development, President Muizzu, who previously served as the capital’s mayor, faced a political setback as his party’s candidate lost in the recent mayoral election. The seat was won by Adam Azim of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which is perceived to be more aligned with India, signalling a potential shift in the nation’s internal political landscape.
