Pakistan’s Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai reaffirmed her unwavering support for Palestinian rights on Thursday amidst a global backlash following her collaboration with former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
In a detailed statement released via her social media platforms, Malala clarified: “I want there to be no confusion about my support for the people of Gaza. I have and will continue to condemn the Israeli government for its violations of international law and alleged war crimes.” In a move to perhaps avoid contentious debates, she disabled the comment feature on this particular post.
This declaration follows intense criticism from numerous social media users who questioned her partnership with Clinton in co-producing the Broadway musical “Suffs.” Critics highlight Clinton’s repeated opposition to calls for a ceasefire in Gaza despite the reported large-scale loss of Palestinian lives.
Malala, a staunch advocate for women’s rights, emphasized her ongoing commitment to advocating for a ceasefire and urgent humanitarian aid for Gaza. She expressed deep concern over the “relentless atrocities against the Palestinian people” and specifically pointed to disturbing reports of mass graves at Gaza’s Nasser and Al-Shifa hospitals.
The Nobel laureate stressed the importance of global solidarity with Gaza: “We must stand in solidarity with the people in Gaza whose voices and demands must be heard. When we see alarming signs of what could be genocide, we cannot afford to delay decisive action. We must work collectively to urge our leaders to halt these alleged war crimes and hold those responsible accountable.”
