At least nine people lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries on Saturday after a passenger bus overturned on the Makran Coastal Highway, police confirmed.
According to Superintendent of Police Coastal Highway Aslam Bangulzai, the bus was travelling from Karachi to Jiwani when the accident occurred near the Hudd area. He said the driver lost control due to overspeeding, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Rescue operations were launched immediately with the support of security forces and Rescue 1122. The injured and the bodies of the deceased were shifted to Ormara Hospital for treatment and medico-legal procedures.
Police said several passengers were critically injured, raising concerns that the death toll could rise. The accident also caused traffic on the Makran Coastal Highway to remain suspended for several hours while rescue and clearance work continued.
The Makran Coastal Highway, also known as N-10 Highway, is a key route linking Karachi with Gwadar. The highway has witnessed numerous serious accidents in recent years, including bus overturns, collisions, brake failures, and crashes involving heavy transport.
Official rescue data shows that road safety remains a major concern along the route. Between January and December 2024, authorities reported 532 traffic accidents on the Makran Coastal Highway alone in the Lasbela and Gwadar regions. These incidents resulted in 43 fatalities and 855 injuries, with rescue teams responding to multiple emergencies throughout the year.
