A significant power failure at the Dhabeji pumping station in Thatta resulted in the shutdown of three pumps after a 72-inch diameter pipeline ruptured.
This pipeline, known as pipeline number 5, provides water to Karachi. The breakdown has halted the city’s supply of over 18 million gallons of water.
The Waterboard attributes the rupture to back pressure from the water. They estimate that repairs will require 24 to 36 hours to complete. During this period, Karachi is likely to experience notable water shortages.
Authorities are actively working to repair the pipeline and restore the water supply.
