Mahira Khan, a celebrated Pakistani actress, recently discussed the profound emotional effects of the photos that went viral with Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor in 2017.
The images, depicting both actors smoking in New York, ignited widespread speculation and controversy, impacting her personally and professionally.
In an intimate conversation with BBC Asian Network, Mahira shared her distress, fearing her career might end. Despite her success in “Raees” alongside Shah Rukh Khan, the backlash and rumors of a romantic link with Ranbir Kapoor devastated her.
Reflecting on that period, Mahira recalled thinking her career could be at risk after reading a critical article. This piece, titled “The Little White Dress,” speculated on a potential downfall in her career, painting a picture of a successful actress suddenly marred by controversy. “I read it and thought, ‘Damn,’” she commented.
The emotional burden was overwhelming. Mahira recounted days when she couldn’t leave her bed, overwhelmed by tears. “It affected my professional and personal life. A lot happened on my side,” she revealed, noting the extensive personal consequences.
During this challenging time, Mahira found solace in the support of her audience and professional associates. “All the brands called me and said, ‘We are with you,'” she recalled, highlighting the solidarity from her professional network.
She acknowledged the difficulties following the incident, describing it as a tumultuous journey. “It’s been a crazy ride. My audience has travelled this journey with me,” she reflected on her experiences of ups and downs.
Despite the hardships, Mahira spoke of triumphs and growth that helped her recover. She credited her resilience to making strong personal decisions, focusing on what was best for her child. “I made some personal choices that were right for me and my child,” she stated.
The initial buzz around Mahira and Ranbir arose from their candid New York encounter, captured without consent. The ensuing media storm criticized Mahira for her smoking, attire, and interaction with Ranbir Kapoor.
Despite these challenges, including a temporary ban from Indian films amid India-Pakistan political tensions, Mahira has maintained her relevance internationally in Pakistan.
