In a significant step for animal welfare, Madhubala, the only elephant at the Karachi Zoological Gardens, moved to Safari Park on Tuesday.
This transfer aims to provide her with a more natural setting and the company of two other elephants.
Four Paws, an international organization, safely transported her over approximately 12.5 kilometres using a heavy container and crane.
Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and Wildlife Department officials supervised the meticulous four-hour process.
This move temporarily disrupted traffic on the Lyari Expressway in the port city.
Four Paws’ involvement was crucial because relocating large animals within the city required specialized expertise and scientific knowledge.
A carefully planned route ensured the transfer avoided obstacles like electricity wires and other public utilities.
Four Paws representatives confirmed to the media that the transfer was successful and that Madhubala was at peace in her new environment. They noted that the relocation was beneficial for her health and care.
Upon arrival at Safari Park, Madhubala was greeted with fruits and a specially prepared swimming pool in her enclosure area.
Madhubala was alone at the Karachi Zoo last year after her companion, Noor Jahan, died. Both elephants were originally brought from Tanzania in 2010.
Following Noor Jahan’s death, animal experts recommended that Madhubala be relocated to Safari Park to join two other elephants.
