Charges and Case Details:
On December 4, 2024, Mangione allegedly shot Thompson from behind on a Manhattan sidewalk, resulting in multiple charges in New York:
- First-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism
- Two counts of second-degree murder
- Four counts of third-degree criminal weapon possession
- One count of fourth-degree weapon possession
- One count of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument
Following his December 9 arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, authorities also charged Mangione with related weapons offences.
Investigators report that Mangione used a suppressor-equipped “ghost gun” and found casings at the scene marked with “deny,” “depose,” and “delay.” They also found his writings criticizing the healthcare system, although he and his family were not UnitedHealthcare clients.
Condemnation and Legal Ramifications:
Officials have strongly condemned the murder. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg emphasized that society cannot tolerate premeditated, targeted gun violence. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro also criticized those portraying Mangione as a hero, stating, “He is no hero.”
