A flight delay in China, caused by a woman’s refusal to stow her Louis Vuitton handbag under the seat, has gone viral, capturing widespread attention on social media.
The incident, which resulted in a one-hour delay, unfolded when a passenger in economy class insisted her handbag was too valuable to be placed on the floor. Despite the flight crew’s requests, she placed the handbag beside her, causing significant disruptions.
According to the South China Morning Post, the situation escalated, and police had to escort the woman off the aircraft, an action that fellow passengers greeted with applause.
The event occurred on August 10, during a flight operated by China Express Airlines from Chongqing municipality to Hebei province. Initially ready for departure, the flight had to return to the boarding gate due to a disagreement.
The episode’s video quickly spread on Douyin, the Chinese social media platform, amassing over 4 million views and sparking heated discussions. An anonymous passenger shared the clip, which captured the unfolding drama.
The cost of a Louis Vuitton handbag in China is about US$3,000, starkly contrasting with the economy ticket price of 800 yuan (approximately US$110). Despite the viral nature of the story, the airline has yet to comment on the outcome of the incident or respond to media inquiries regarding the case.
This unusual delay has ignited a debate among netizens on social media platforms like Weibo and Douyin. One user remarked, “She valued the bag more than her life,” highlighting the perceived extravagance of the passenger’s actions. Another suggested, “The flight attendant could have offered her a bag to put her handbag in. Is it really necessary to waste an hour and kick her off the plane?” suggesting alternative solutions could have been explored to avoid the disruption.
