Tour organisers have revealed that Lionel Messi earned nearly INR 900 million during his three-day visit to India, which began with a chaotic reception in Kolkata.
Satadru Dutta, one of the organisers, said the Argentine football star received approximately INR890 million for the tour. He added that, despite the substantial payment, Messi appeared visibly unhappy due to poor crowd control at public events.
The disclosure comes as authorities investigate disruptions at Salt Lake Stadium, where Messi’s appearance drew massive crowds. During the event, spectators reportedly threw chairs and vandalised parts of the venue, prompting security concerns.

According to a report by NDTV, approximately INR11 million was paid to the Indian government in taxes, while organisers spent at least INR100 million on arrangements. The report added that sponsors covered roughly 30 per cent of the total expenses.
Investigators have also frozen INR20 million in Dutta’s bank account. He told authorities that the funds came from ticket sales for Messi’s appearances in Kolkata and Hyderabad, as well as sponsor contributions.

Despite the tour’s financial success, officials said Messi concluded his visit on an unhappy note. Investigators found that the football icon felt uncomfortable with spectators attempting to touch or hug him during events.
The inquiry further revealed that West Bengal’s sports minister allegedly used his influence to grant access to relatives and close acquaintances during Messi’s visit. Authorities continue to examine lapses in security planning and crowd management linked to the high-profile tour.
