The Lahore High Court has taken further steps to tackle the escalating smog levels in Punjab by issuing a set of new directives.
Justice Shahid Karim, during a hearing on citizen petitions for smog control, mandated that all markets in the province close by 8 pm and remain completely shut on Sundays. The court identified smoke-emitting vehicles and heavy trucks in Lahore and its vicinity as primary pollution contributors, leading to a prohibition on such vehicles on motorways and ring roads. Additionally, the court called on the provincial government to limit truck and trawler access to the city.

Furthermore, the court ordered the deployment of Dolphin Force and other police units to effectively manage heavy traffic.
Justice Shahid Karim criticized the Transport Department for its inaction and proposed a Rs 50,000 fine for buses flouting pollution norms and demanding stringent enforcement of these regulations.
He emphasized the need for the Transport Department to enforce these orders promptly to support the government’s efforts to combat the smog issue. The judge pointed out that increased government pressure on District Commissioners (DCs) would enhance their effectiveness. He also suggested that DCs and commissioners should personally oversee nighttime operations to ensure adherence to these orders.
Justice Karim noted the implementation of a one-dish policy at weddings but mentioned that more needs to be done to manage the gatherings effectively.
