Electric distribution companies are increasingly creating obstacles for solar energy consumers, with the Lahore Electric Supply Company suspending the registration of new net metering applications despite clear directives from the regulator.
According to affected consumers, LESCO has stopped accepting fresh net metering requests, leaving applicants in limbo. Many report being forced to make repeated visits to company offices without clear timelines or explanations, causing frustration and financial strain.
The move comes despite warnings and notices from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority, raising questions about the compliance of power distribution companies.
The Pakistan Solar Association has voiced serious concern over the situation and called for immediate intervention by the government and NEPRA.

Pakistan Solar Association Chairman Waqas Musa said that self-imposed restrictions by distribution companies have badly damaged the solar sector. He stressed that globally, policy changes do not result in the abrupt suspension of ongoing processes.
He noted that thousands of consumers have invested significant sums to install solar systems, only to have their net metering applications remain stalled indefinitely. According to Musa, many LESCO customers have been waiting for months for net metering meters, while approvals for certified meters have also been suspended.
He further accused power distribution companies of deliberately discouraging net metering through administrative delays and procedural hurdles. Musa warned that such practices are hurting not only consumers but also the wider solar industry, which plays a critical role in reducing energy costs and easing pressure on the national grid.
Industry representatives have urged authorities to ensure the immediate resumption of net metering approvals and enforce regulatory directives to protect consumer confidence and support the growth of renewable energy in Pakistan.
