Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s first openly gay Prime Minister, made a surprising announcement on Wednesday, stating his intention to resign due to personal and political reasons.
As reported by NBC News, after ascending to the role of taoiseach in 2017, Varadkar has decided to step down from his leadership positions in Fine Gael, a major component of Ireland’s ruling coalition alongside Fianna Fáil and the Green Party.
During a press conference at Dublin’s governmental headquarters, he reflected on Ireland’s progress towards equality. He left the reasons for his resignation and plans vague, stating, “I have no personal or any specific political plans.”
The news came unexpectedly to many in Ireland, as a senior official, preferring to remain anonymous, described to NBC News. Varadkar’s professional background as a doctor was mentioned as a potential factor in his decision to depart from politics, indicating the demands of political life may have influenced his resignation.
This move comes shortly after Varadkar meets President Joe Biden at the White House but does not directly trigger a general election. Instead, the process to elect a new leader for Fine Gael is set to conclude by April 6, with a power transition expected after the parliamentary Easter recess.
