In Lebanon, eight individuals perished, and over 2,750 sustained injuries, many critically, from synchronized pager detonations specifically targeting Hezbollah, recognized as a terrorist organization by the US.
The attacks also injured Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, as reported by Iran’s state media.
Hezbollah, which functions as both a political and military entity in Lebanon with backing from Iran, accused Israel of orchestrating these attacks. According to Hezbollah, this incident represents the most significant security breach they have yet encountered, with all devices detonating almost simultaneously.
Additional reports suggest technical failures, such as overheating from lithium batteries, possibly induced by a cyber attack. In contrast, others imply that explosives might have been secretly inserted into the devices before distribution. These speculations remain unverified.
Notably, the explosion also affected regions outside Lebanon; in Syria, at least one pager explosion in a vehicle in Damascus injured four people.
Hezbollah’s official response condemned the incident as a severe security breach attributed to Israeli interference. They are currently conducting comprehensive investigations to determine the causes of these simultaneous explosions and have advised the public to remain vigilant against potential misinformation, which could intensify psychological warfare tactics by Israel. To date, Israel has not responded to these allegations.”
