The government of Punjab, led by Maryam Nawaz, asserts that it has successfully lowered the prices of essential commodities, including meat, across the region. However, this claim has stirred confusion and scepticism among residents of Lahore, especially after images showing goat meat priced at PKR 1,362 per kilogram went viral on social media.
Journalist Imran Mir shared his experience to shed light on the meat prices in local markets. According to him, the current price of mutton ranges from PKR 2,200 to PKR 2,400 per kilogram, beef is sold for PKR 1,100 to PKR 1,200 per kilogram, and minced meat costs about PKR 1,300 per kilogram. These figures starkly contrast with the prices circulated by the Punjab government’s promotional posts.
Adding to the debate, a social media user humorously suggested that the low prices touted by the government might only be available in a mythical market, likening it to the same place “where Maryam Nawaz buys her suits for PKR 800.”
The comment underscores the public’s scepticism and concern over the authenticity of the government’s claims regarding meat prices, hinting at the possibility of misinformation or out-of-touch governance.
